Today’s post is just a quick look at a project in progress – the latest video submission for the Zodiac Games in the Dharma Artist Collective. Here’s what I’m working on for submission by Sunday.
100 Liminal Days is an experimental project of embracing my current transitional season after exiting my business by sharing an honest, real-time account of my self-initiation experience in daily posts. Visit Day 1/100 to learn more and sign up to get the weekly recaps delivered to your inbox.
The Zodiac Games – Sagittarius 2
As a member of the Dharma Artist Collective online community, one of the cool opportunities within is to participate in a monthly art contest called the Zodiac Games. In these games, we are given a theme (or an open theme) to create a piece of art and share it in video format for the rest of the community to vote on. The top eight submissions receive cash prizes! First place receives $1,000, second place $500, and 3rd-8th places get $250.
I’ve entered the Games a few times over the last 18 months or so, but have never placed. I’m on a mission to earn some cash for my art though!
The theme for this month is to create a 2025 Dharma Time Capsule. Here are the official theme instructions:
For Sagitarius 2, We want you to create a ‘2025 in review’ kind of art piece where you review the year in whatever way stokes you. Imagine your children will see this in 10 years, or maybe you will look at it in 20 years. Maybe you go on to be a famous luminary and this will be something a kid in the future will watch that will inspire them to try, to not give up, and to pursue their dreams
Whatever frame gives you the most stoke, pick that frame. Show us what 2025 meant to you; as an artist, as a citizen, as a child, and as an ancestor.
The two limitations are:
Your video must be under 30 minutes
Your submission must be in video format
I didn’t want to do this at first because of the busy holiday season, but another friend in the DAC committed to entering every game for the next six months and my competitiveness perked up. I decided to go for it, and gave myself another limitation – my video must be 3-minutes or less instead of 30-minutes or less. The reason I want to make a shorter video is because voters are not required to watch every video. They can vote as they like, and I’ve noticed that shorter videos tend to place most often.
Packing all of 2025 into a 3-minute video is a big challenge, but I had an idea to display everything I’m doing with 100 Liminal Days and my commitment to daily practices and living mindfully. I’m still making some final edits to my video, but want to share my progress here.
I started calling this project, “Another Breath” but really it’s about breath after breath. I think I’ll change the title to “Breathing Dharma” instead. (I ended up changing the title to The Year That Breathed Me instead!) My goal here is to show inhales as experiences and exhales as expression. At some point in the flow though, those experiences and expressions begin to overlap and speed up. Time seems to go by faster and faster. It feels impossible to separate experiences from expression sometimes, but I was able to group things better and time it with the breaths for a better interpretation of my vision for this project.
Here is the final edited version I submitted into the Games, and below is the draft version I shared with a couple of friends for feedback.
